One step a day: the art of shrinking a goal
When we look at a big goal, the first thing we feel is often overwhelm. "Writing a book", "getting out of debt", "learning a new language": each of them can take months or years. Not knowing where to begin with something this big is the most common reason for never starting.
One step in a day
The solution is to reduce the goal to a one-day piece. The question stops being "How do I reach this goal?" and becomes "What small thing can I do for this goal today?" This question can be answered, because a day's work is easy to estimate.
How do you write a good step?
It helps if a step has four qualities:
- It is a single action. "Tidy the room and sort the papers" is two jobs. Choose one.
- Its start is clear. Instead of "start working", "I sit at the desk and open the laptop."
- It takes less than ten minutes. Starting small increases consistency.
- It is written in the first person. Like "I sit with the book for half an hour".
Examples
| Big goal | The step of the day |
|---|---|
| Finishing the draft of my book | Today I write just one paragraph. |
| Moving regularly | I walk for ten minutes. |
| Learning a new language | I study five new words. |
| Getting my budget in order | I note down today's spending. |
| Strengthening my relationships | I write a short message to a friend. |
If the step feels too small
At first these steps may look "too tiny". This is completely normal. The purpose of a small step is not to finish the goal that day but to stay in motion. Over time the steps grow by themselves. Starting is hard, continuing is easy. A two-minute start often turns into twenty minutes of work.
On a day the step is not taken
Some days you cannot take the step. This is not a failure. The next day shrink the step even further and try again. What matters is remembering that you can make a fresh start every day.
The step of the day in Kendime Söz
On the Today screen, the "Today's one step" card sits under the sentence of the day. You tap the card and write one sentence (at most 100 characters). If you do not know what to write, you can choose from the ready suggestions under "Ideas": "I give the first 10 minutes to work", "I answer one message right away", "I walk for ten minutes". When you do it during the day, you complete it by tapping the circle on the left. The weekly summary shows how many steps you completed that week.
