What does each screen and button in Kendime Söz do? A short guide to the Today, My Manifesto, Journal, Track and Profile tabs.
At a glance: what is what for?
The app has five tabs. In the bottom bar they sit in this order from left to right.
| Tab | What for? | How long a day? |
| Today | You read the sentence of the day and pick a small step. | 1 minute |
| My Manifesto | You gather your values, goals and promise in one document. | Once a month |
| Journal | You write a few sentences to the day's question or your own thoughts. | Whenever you like |
| Track | You see the days you've read on a yearly dial. | Just a glance |
| Profile | You manage reminders, sentence preferences and your data. | Set once |
First launch
When you open the app for the first time, a short welcome screen greets you. It asks three things.
- Your name
- It appears on your manifesto and profile. It stays only on your device.
- Your focus areas
- Choose as many as you like from Career, Health, Learning, Relationships, Money and Creativity. The sentences of the day are favored toward the areas you pick. You can change them later in Profile.
- Reminder
- Turn on "Remind me every day" and set a time. The app works fine if you don't allow notifications, you just won't get the reminder.
You don't need an account. After these three steps you go straight to the Today tab.
Today
The main screen. You see a single sentence each day and start your day with it.
- Sentence of the day
- A short sentence written in the first person. It doesn't change during the day, and a new one arrives the next day. The pool is used up before sentences you've read come around again.
- I read it
- Marks that you read the sentence. The dial and your streak on the Track screen move with this button. The button changes to "Read today".
- Add to Favorites (heart)
- Saves the sentence to your favorites. You find your favorites under "My favorites" in the Track tab.
- Share
- Turns the sentence into a stylish card. You can add it to your story, save it to Photos or send it to a friend. Details are in the sharing section.
- Today's one step
- The place where you turn the sentence into a small action. Tap the card and write a sentence (up to 100 characters), and when you do it during the day, tap the circle on the left to complete it. There are ready suggestions under "Ideas".
- Last 7 days
- The dots of the last seven days. A filled dot means you read that day. Your streak is written on the right.
- Today's thought
- The question of the day. If you tap the card, the Journal tab opens and you write your answer there.
- Settings icon at the top right
- Opens sentence preferences. You choose here which topics and types the sentences come from.
My Manifesto
You gather your values, your goals and the promise you make to yourself on one sheet. The document looks like a signed piece of paper.
- My values
- You add the principles you care about as short tags, for example honesty or family. You can add up to 12 values.
- My goals
- You write your numbered goals. Up to 10 goals can be entered, each kept short (140 characters).
- My promise
- The one-sentence promise you make to yourself. It sits in the middle of the document in italics.
- Signature
- You sign on the screen with your finger. The signature sits at the bottom of the document together with the date.
- Edit
- It sits at the top left. You change your values, goals, promise and signature whenever you like.
- Share (top right)
- You share your manifesto as a PDF, as an image or straight to Instagram Stories.
- Monthly check-in
- The card below the document. Each month, for each of your goals, you pick the option closest to you from 1 to 5 and write a short note if you like. There are no right or wrong answers. "Update" changes that month's record, and "History" shows earlier months.
Journal
A writing space that looks like a ruled notebook. It is not sent anywhere, what you write stays on your device.
- New page (+)
- Opens a blank page. With "Open today's page" you can also go to today's page.
- Tag
- You add a mood or topic tag to the page. Ready tags: Focus, Felt good, Struggled, Learned, Gratitude and Plan. With "Add tag" you can write your own.
- Change date
- Lets you move the page to another day. If you forgot to write yesterday, you can write on yesterday's page.
- Word count
- The word count appears next to each page. It sets no target, it only informs.
- Saving
- What you write is saved automatically. You don't need to press a save button.
Track
The screen that shows your journey at a glance. It is designed not to create guilt but to let you see your progress.
- Journey dial
- A circle with 365 ticks. Every day you read becomes a dark tick, and today is shown in terracotta. The center shows which day you are on. The day you start using the app counts as day 1, and after 365 days the second year begins.
- Days read, day streak, journey day
- Three small boxes: how many days you've read in total, how many days in a row, and which day of the journey you are on.
- Flexible streak
- One missed day a week doesn't break your streak. The aim is not to be perfect but to keep going.
- Weekly summary
- Shows the summary of the week: which days you read, how many journal pages and words you wrote, how many steps you completed. "Sentence of the week" and a comparison with the previous week are here too. You can move to earlier weeks with the arrow buttons.
- Share my year
- Lets you share your dial as a beautiful card.
- My favorites and Sentences I've read
- Sentences you marked with the heart sit under "My favorites". With "All" you see every sentence you've read so far.
Profile
The place for things you set once and forget.
- Me
- Your name and the field where you describe yourself in one sentence. After you write, the "Done" key on the keyboard closes the keyboard.
- My sentences
- Opens three screens: My sentences and pinned sentence (where you write your own sentences and pin one), Sentence preferences and My if-then plans. All are explained in the sentences section.
- Notifications and widget
- Here you choose whether the notification and widget show "New every day" or a "Pinned sentence". The "Sunday summary and month-end check-in" switch is here too.
- My focus areas
- You change the areas you chose on the welcome screen.
- Reminder
- Turns the daily reminder on and off and sets its time.
- Data and security
- Lock with Face ID locks the app. Export my data (JSON) writes everything to a readable file. Delete all my data can't be undone, so we suggest exporting before you delete.
How sentences are chosen, and how to write your own
The app has over two thousand sentences. Every sentence belongs to a topic and a type.
- 9 topics
- Focus, Progress, Mistakes and Learning, Action and Habit, Values, Relationships, Health and Energy, Money and Effort, Rest and Balance.
- 4 types
- Bridge sentences are realistic sentences that accept the hard moment. Value sentences remind you what you care about. Action sentences call you to a small task today. If-then sentences are plans in the form "If this happens, I do that."
- Sentence preferences
- You turn topics and types on and off. The screen shows how many sentences are left in your pool. The change applies from tomorrow, today's sentence doesn't change.
- Your own sentences
- In the "My sentences and pinned sentence" screen, write your own sentence with "New sentence". It is recommended to keep it short and realistic, in the first person. If "Include my own sentences" is on, your sentences come up a little more often than the others.
- Pin
- If you pin a sentence you like, it always appears in the notification and widget (if "Pinned sentence" is selected in Profile). The Today screen still shows a new sentence each day.
- If-then plan
- You fill in the "If" and "Then" fields, for example "If my attention drifts, I return to a single task." Your sentence appears under "Your plan". If you like, you are reminded every day at the time you set. Your plans also enter the pool for the sentence of the day.
- Daily notification
- At the time you choose, the sentence of the day arrives as a notification. Notifications are scheduled on your device, they don't come from a server.
- Sunday summary and month-end check-in
- A gentle reminder arrives on Sunday for the weekly summary and at month end for the monthly check-in. You can turn it off with the switch in Profile.
- Home Screen widget
- Shows the sentence of the day on your Home Screen in small and medium sizes. You add it by long-pressing the Home Screen and tapping "+".
- Lock Screen widget
- Shows the sentence of the day on the Lock Screen in two forms, rectangular and inline.
- Shortcuts and Siri
- There are three ready shortcuts: Say the sentence of the day, Count today as read and Write today's step. You can tell Siri "Kendime Söz sentence of the day". They also run from the Shortcuts app.
Apple Watch
The Apple Watch app brings the sentence of the day to your wrist. Opening Kendime Söz on your phone once is enough, the sentences reach the watch on their own.
- Sentence of the day
- Today's sentence appears on the watch in a readable typeface. If it is long, you scroll with the Digital Crown.
- I read it
- Marks today as read with one tap. Your streak and dial on the phone update too.
- Last 7 days and streak
- The watch shows the dots of seven days and your streak.
- Watch face
- You can add the sentence of the day and your streak to your watch face as a complication.
- Refresh
- If no sentence has arrived, tap "Refresh". Opening the app on your phone once also starts the sync.
Language
Kendime Söz is available in eight languages: Turkish, English, German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Korean and Russian. The interface, the sentences and the daily questions come in your chosen language. The language is picked from your device's language. To change it, use Settings > Kendime Söz > Language on your iPhone.
Sharing
Sentences, the manifesto and the yearly dial can be shared. Sharing is always under your control: only the card or file you choose is sent.
- Three card styles
- Paper is a simple card on a cream background, Ink is a card on a dark background, and Dial is a card showing the yearly progress dial.
- Instagram Story
- The card is prepared in story size (9:16) and sent straight to Instagram Stories. If Instagram isn't installed, the system share sheet opens.
- Share and Save to Photos
- You share with another app or save the card to your photos. Only permission to add is requested to save, your library is not read.
Your data and privacy
- Where does it live?
- On your device. If your iCloud account is on, it syncs between your own devices. This sync happens only within your Apple account, we can't access your data.
- Lock
- It can be locked with Face ID. If there is no Face ID, the device passcode is used.
- Backup and deletion
- You can export as JSON from Profile or delete everything.
- Tracking and ads
- None. Read the privacy policy for details.
Small tips
- It's fine if you skip something. The streak is flexible, the next day you continue from where you left off.
- In the first week, just tap "I read it". Don't rush the journal, steps or manifesto.
- If a sentence caught you, mark it with the heart. On a hard day it feels good to go back and read My favorites.
- Choose a time you already spend on your phone as the reminder. First thing in the morning or after dinner works well.
