The bridge sentence: why realistic affirmations work better

October 5, 2026 · 3 min read

Affirmations are a familiar idea for most of us: look in the mirror, say something kind to yourself. But this approach does not help everyone in the same way. In a study published in 2009, people with low self-esteem who repeated a big sentence such as "I am a lovable person" felt worse afterwards than those who did not repeat it. The sentence contradicted the reality inside them, and the mind objected to the contradiction.

The problem is not the sentence itself, but its distance

A sentence that is too far from where you are is not believable. If you tell yourself "I do everything flawlessly" on a hard day, your mind immediately lines up counterexamples. But it is hard to object to "On this difficult day, I still take a small step", because it is true.

What is a bridge sentence?

A bridge sentence builds a passage between where you are and where you want to go. It has three qualities.

  • It accepts the hard moment. It can say "I am tired today" or "I am not there yet."
  • It is process oriented. It stresses the step taken, not the result.
  • It is realistic. It avoids absolutes such as "always" and "never".

A few examples

Let us write the same intention in two different ways.

Big and far awayBridge sentence
I never make mistakes. When I make a mistake, I learn and keep going.
I am very disciplined. When my motivation drops, I simplify the plan.
I finish everything. When I cannot finish everything, I return to the most important task.
I never feel stress. In the middle of a busy day, I take a short break.

None of the sentences on the right claim perfection. All of them make room for a hard moment and suggest a response to it.

Writing your own bridge sentence

You can try this pattern: "When [hard situation], I [small and realistic action]." For example "The moment I get impatient, I take three breaths" or "On a day I cannot stick to the plan, I start again the next day." If the sentence feels exaggerated when you read it aloud, make it smaller. If it feels familiar, you are in the right place.

A note

This article is about personal development and writing practice. It is not treatment or medical advice. For long-lasting difficulties, getting support from a professional is always a good idea.

About one in five of the more than 2,000 sentences in Kendime Söz is a bridge sentence. These are sentences that accept the hard moment, are realistic and focus on the process. The rest are action, "if-then" and value sentences. In the sentence settings you choose which types come by turning them on and off.
